Every year, thousands of home fires and electrocution deaths could be prevented by proper GFCI and AFCI protection. If your Lake County home hasn't been updated in the last decade, there's a good chance you're not fully protected β€” and that your home isn't up to current Ohio electrical code.

What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet monitors the flow of electricity and cuts power in as little as 1/40th of a second if it detects even a tiny imbalance β€” the kind caused by electricity flowing through a person. They prevent electrocution. You know them by the 'Test' and 'Reset' buttons on the outlet face.

Where Are GFCI Outlets Required in Ohio?

  • All bathroom outlets
  • Kitchen countertop outlets within 6 feet of a sink
  • Garage outlets
  • Outdoor outlets
  • Basement outlets (unfinished areas)
  • Near crawl spaces and utility sinks
  • Within 6 feet of any pool, spa, or hot tub

What Is an AFCI Breaker?

An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker detects dangerous electrical arcing β€” the kind that happens inside walls from damaged or pierced wiring, loose connections, or old wiring β€” before it can start a fire. Unlike GFCI, AFCI protection is usually built into the circuit breaker, not the outlet.

Where Are AFCI Breakers Required in Ohio?

  • All bedroom circuits (this has been required since 2002)
  • Living rooms, family rooms, parlors, libraries, dens
  • Hallways and closets
  • Kitchens and laundry areas (newer code cycle)
  • Any circuit supplying outlets or devices in habitable spaces

My Home Is Older β€” Do I Need to Retrofit?

Technically, Ohio code doesn't retroactively require all older homes to be upgraded unless you perform major renovations. However, HB Electric strongly recommends GFCI and AFCI upgrades for all older Lake County homes. The cost is modest, the protection is enormous, and it can dramatically reduce your homeowner's insurance premium.
